About the event
Georg Friedrich Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach. Both grandmasters were composers of the Baroque era (1600 - 1750). The two never met. Handel's cradle was in Halle, Germany. His father was a physician. Handel's parents were initially opposed to a musical career. On the sly, the young Georg Friedrich practiced on the keyboard.
From 1712, he lived and worked in England. As a British citizen, he became a superstar. As a court composer, he dwelled in the highest circles. Handel earned a lot of money and could even afford a Rembrandt. Handel was a prolific writer. He composed some 2,000 arias that appear in 40 operas, 30 oratorios and 120 cantatas. Handel died in London in 1759. At his own request, he was interred in Westminster Abbey, near Shakespeare and the composer Henri Purcell. Part of his masterpiece Messiah is carved…
